{"id":376,"date":"2020-03-02T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-03-02T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/biagibros.com\/blog?p=376"},"modified":"2021-11-08T21:58:02","modified_gmt":"2021-11-08T21:58:02","slug":"musculoskeletal-pain-truck-driving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/biagibros.com\/blog\/driver-health-safety\/musculoskeletal-pain-truck-driving\/","title":{"rendered":"Musculoskeletal Pain &#038; Truck Driving"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Musculoskeletal Pain or Doc&#8217; My Back Hurts<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Blog 5 Truck Driving &amp; Health<\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Thus far is this series, <em>Truck Driving &amp; Health<\/em>, we have looked at the good-news, bad-news in the trucking industry regarding diet, exercise, air quality, and sleep.\u00a0 We will now turn our attention to the area of musculoskeletal health and issues affecting the trucking population.\u00a0 By definition, <strong>Musculoskeletal<\/strong>\u00a0disorders (commonly referred to as MSD&#8217;s) are injuries or pain in our\u00a0<strong>musculoskeletal<\/strong>\u00a0system, which includes our joints, ligaments, muscles, nerves, tendons, and the structures that support our limbs, neck and back.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Musculoskeletal Pain &amp; Truck Driving\u00a0<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The University of Waterloo conducted a study in 2018 which revealed that almost 60% of truck drivers experience musculoskeletal pain \u2013 particularly low back pain.\u00a0 NIOSH (the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) reports that musculoskeletal injuries are 3.5 times higher in the truck driving population.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Why do truck drivers seem predisposed to higher incidents of musculoskeletal pain or injury?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>One reason is the potential for injury associated with slips and falls entering and exiting trucks, checking and securing loads during wet or icy conditions.\u00a0 Short-haul drivers whose jobs require more loading and unloading are at greater risk for bend-twist-lift injuries.\u00a0 Apart from these occupational hazards which involve the laws of physics and gravity, other laws are at work within human anatomy and physiology.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Use it or Lose it!<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>It almost sounds like a Nike ad that didn\u2019t quite make the cut: \u201cuse it or lose it!\u201d.\u00a0 Though it may be a tad pop culturesque, the little phrase holds something of the essence of sound science \u2013 Wolff\u2019s law and Davis\u2019 law.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Julius Wolff was a German anatomist and surgeon who discovered that bone in a healthy animal or person will adapt to the load under which it is placed.\u00a0 The bone will actually remodel itself and become stronger over time in response to the increased load.\u00a0 Davis\u2019 law is similar except it relates to soft tissue \u2013 muscles, ligaments, tendons.\u00a0 And the converse is also true.\u00a0 Lack of stress or load will result in decline of functioning \u2013 strength, length, range of motion.\u00a0 If you have ever had a limb in a cast, you will notice how the muscles of that limb have atrophied several weeks later when the cast is removed. It takes a return to usage for the muscles of that limb to return to pre-injury size.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Not only does the sedentary nature of truck driving effect metabolic functioning, it also effects musculoskeletal functioning.\u00a0 Apart from effecting cardiovascular health (see <a href=\"https:\/\/biagibros.com\/blogtruck-driving-health-2\/\">blogs 2<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/biagibros.com\/blogtruck-driving-health-3\/\">3 of this series<\/a>), remaining seated behind the wheel of a truck for long periods of time can cause problems for musculature, joints and bone density.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Movement is Key<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/biagibros.com\/blogwp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/129610319_s.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-378\" src=\"https:\/\/biagibros.com\/blogwp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/129610319_s-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"musculoskeletal pain\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/biagibros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/129610319_s-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/biagibros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/129610319_s-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/biagibros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/129610319_s-100x67.jpg 100w, https:\/\/biagibros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/129610319_s-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/biagibros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/129610319_s-200x133.jpg 200w, https:\/\/biagibros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/129610319_s-450x300.jpg 450w, https:\/\/biagibros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/129610319_s-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/biagibros.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/129610319_s.jpg 848w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Many joints in the body are synovial joints (e.g., fingers, knees, hips, shoulders).\u00a0 Synovial joints require movement in order to keep them healthy.\u00a0 When these joints move, synovial fluid is released into the joint to keep it lubricated and to provide nutrition to the joint.\u00a0 Remaining seated for long periods of time immobilizes the hip joints and reduces the synovial fluid circulating in the joint.\u00a0 <strong>The body has an amazing built-in warning system<\/strong>.\u00a0 What starts as a stiff and uncomfortable feeling if ignored often crosses over into pain.\u00a0 Hip pain and dysfunction is often related to low back pain.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prolonged Inactivity<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>To add insult to injury, prolonged immobility promotes the production of scar tissue-like adhesions in muscles, and immobility also reduces circulation.\u00a0 Prolonged sitting may also lead to nerve impingement in the hips, shortening of muscles of the quadriceps and hip flexors. Remaining seated for long periods of time contributes to a weakening of core muscles which help protect the back.\u00a0 All of this negatively impacts posture.\u00a0 Postural imbalance leads to pain which often leads to a reduced desire for movement, which leads to further loss of muscle tone, range of motion and postural balance.\u00a0 It is the proverbial vicious circle.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Get Out &amp; Walk<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Fortunately the trucking industry is aware of the high rates of musculoskeletal dysfunction faced by OTR and short-haul truck drivers.\u00a0 There is a movement towards, well, movement.\u00a0 Truck drivers who have embraced trucking as a career are also embracing the need for self-care \u2013 part of which is physical fitness.\u00a0 Truck stops are starting to provide safe places to walk or run.\u00a0 Terminals are building gyms into their work sites.\u00a0 On-line resources are providing coaching and tips to assist truck drivers who want to pursue better musculoskeletal health through movement and stretching.
